Rights and obligations during testing

It is in each athlete’s best interest to be well-aware of the standard doping control testing process.

For both in-competition and out-of-competition testing, athletes have the obligation:

• to remain within direct observation of the doping control officer or chaperone at all times from the point of notification until the completion of the sample collection procedure;

• to produce appropriate identification;

• to comply with sample collection procedures – failure to do so may constitute an anti-doping rule violation;

• report immediately for a test to the doping control station, unless they have valid reasons for delay.

For both in-competition and out-of-competition testing, athletes have the right:

• to have a representative with them and/or an interpreter (if available);

• to ask for additional information about the sample collection process;

• request a delay in reporting to the doping control station for valid reasons;

• request modifications to the sample collection procedure (if the athlete is a minor or athlete with a disability);

• to be offered a choice of appropriate equipment for collecting and sealing their sample;

• to provide comments on the conduct of the procedure.

As noted above, athletes have the right to request a delay in reporting to the doping control station. Such a delay is possible only in specific circumstances and if the athlete can be continuously chaperoned and kept under direct observation during the delay.

For in-competition testing, the request may relate to the following activities:

• participation in a victory ceremony;

• fulfilment of media commitments;

• competing in further competitions;

• performing a warm down;

• obtaining necessary medical treatment;

• locating a representative and/or interpreter;

• obtaining photo identification.

For out-of-competition testing, the request may relate to the following activities:

• locating a representative;

• completing a training session;

• receiving necessary medical treatment;

• obtaining photo identification.

After the end of the sample collection process, each athlete has the right to a copy of the completed doping control form.
